Schwinn, wobbly kitten rescued today! Safe at Carol’s Ferals

by Carol on July 16, 2010

Wanna make God laugh?  Tell him what you’re doing tomorrow!  Watch him LOL when you tell him what you’ll be doing in an hour.

I awoke with a plan.  Within 40 minutes of rolling out of bed, the plan went completely kapput and I am now writing a blog entry about a rescued kitten rather than booking my flight to the NO MORE HOMELESS PETS conference this coming fall.

It’s all Lea’s fault!  Lea Palmer, my good friend and volunteer called while biking on a trail near West River Drive.  She found a mess of a kitten in need.  Here’s her story which explains my involvement and subsequent derailing of my entire day.  (Welcomed none-the-less)

LEA’S STORY:

Abandoned kitten on White Pine bike trail: I saw something up ahead on the paved White Pine Trail about 2 hours into my bicycle ride.  Branch? Nope.  Squirrel? Nope, ears.
Rabbit? Nope, different ears, did not hop away.

As I rolled to a stop in the middle of the trail ( a HUGE no-no in trail etiquette) my endorphin addled brain registered it as some kind of feline. The head & body fur was SO wet, all I recognized was the stripes on the dry tail. When the feline lifted it’s head from trying to eat something off the pavement, the head was constantly bobbling. I could then see it was a kitten, approx. 3 mos. old. It’s eyes were open & clear but they didn’t seem to react to my presence.

I called the saint of ferals, Carol Manos. I put the kitten in my tote & the tote in my bike’s basket. I rode on & met Carol 15 min. later.

In less than an hour the kitten was assessed by Dr. Langlois et. al., & named Schwinn.

Back to my commentary (you know it’s mine cuz I surely don’t refer to myself as a saint….far from it):  I got the kitten immediately to Dr. Langlois (bless him for being available to me always) who checked her over and diagnosed her with CF, Cerebellar Hypoplasia.   She ate a whole can of kitten food and fell asleep in the carrier on the way home.  Bruce says she is happy and well and while she will always be wobbly, she can live a good life.  I was relieved.  This is my first CF kitty.  I met some when I was at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in 2004, but I’ve never had one in my rescue.  And when I woke up this morning, I’d never guessed I would have one with me TODAY!

Here’s some information about CF:

This is little SCHWINN found on the bike trail, soaking wet and unable to walk.

SCHWINN though safe and dry, sleeping in her litter box.

Finally, with a little help from Lea, Schwinn found her bed.

She will be allowed to fatten up a bit.  Right now she’s only 1.9 lbs.  Once she’s a healthy weight, we’ll have her fixed, tested and she will be ready to be adopted into a very loving home.

If you’d like to hear true accounts of people and how they love their CH kitties, here is their outreach group’s forum:

Thank you Kim Bearup of Murphy’s Pet Project for this information!  She has two CH kitties who just turned 2 years old.
